Under Current Channel select the target language. (For this example, Italian is shown.)

Click on Subtitle.

Click on the title of the file you will work on to open it.

In order to view the target language subtitles, ensure that target language (flag) appears in the upper left. If it is set to English, use the dropdown to change it to the target language.

The target language subtitles should appear underneath the corresponding English subtitles.

Edit directly in the target language spaces. Do not change any of the words in the English spaces.

Edit for: Correct translation of words, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and speaker.

As you edit, use the glossary terms already translated for consistency.

Your work will be saved automatically.

Watch the CPS (characters per second) on the lines.

When colored Blue, they are ideal. Orange is a little high, and Red is too high.

The CPS can be lowered by using shorter target language phrases that convey the same meaning. This will allow the subtitles to appear for an adequate amount of time to be easily read by the viewer.

Another way to lower the CPS is to split or combine English lines. (Split a red high numbered one into 2 phrases, or combine a high red one with a lower blue one to make them both medium orange.)

Use Return to split lines, and use Delete to combine them.

Use the Ai feature or write out your own translation when a change is necessary. The Ai feature generates alternatives in the target language that you can use if you like.

Choose to keep the Ai translation, or click Shorter, Longer, or Custom Prompt for options, or Generate New.

Use Replace with Selection to save.

To shorten CPS you can sometimes remove unnecessary words, as in this case the word "Ora" for "Now" can be edited out since it does not change the meaning, but remember to edit to correct capitalization whenever needed.

The video appears on the right side and can be played as you work.

Use play/pause, volume, and speed as desired.

The timeline at the bottom shows where you are in the video and what phrases will appear together. Don’t change anything on the timeline, as we want to keep the subtitles in sync with what is happening visually on the video.

Of course with English audio, the target language will not match exactly, but we want to keep it as close as possible. Ideally, subtitles will align to the speaker as closely as possible (so subtitles appear when the presenter is talking).

• Duplicate Error: If a line appears twice, and is truly a duplicate that is considered an error, you can delete one of the lines by using the circled red "X" to the right of that line. Or you can delete a box of text by using "Delete" in the box on the timeline. Be very cautious using delete.
• Combining Lines: If a line is very short, and needs to be combined with the one above it, you can do this on the ENGLISH text. Simply place the curser at the beginning of the line that should be combined with the one above it, and use the "Delete" key on your keyboard. This will pop that line up to the upper line and they will both appear in the same box of text. The translated line will follow.
• Splitting Lines: If a line is too long, and needs to be split into two text boxes, you can do this on the ENGLISH text. Place the curser where you need to split the line, and use the "Return" key on your keyboard to create another text box with the second half of the too-long line. The translated line will follow.
• Holes in the Timeline: The timeline indicates when subtitles appear on the video. If there is a hole (blank space), no subtitle will appear then. If there is no one speaking, there should not be a subtitle showing on the video, and a hole is correct. If someone is speaking, there should be a subtitle showing and a text box on the timeline. You can make slight corrections on the timeline by sliding the text boxes to the right or left a little bit. Pay attention to the bottom audio line. When it is flat, no one is speaking. If it shows activity, someone is.
• Characters Per Second: Aim for Green or Yellow. Red should be adjusted if possible. Shift the timeline slightly to allow more time to view subtitles.

Here is a Russian subtitle example:

• A: The audio line at the bottom is flat since there is no one speaking then, so there should not be a subtitle appearing on the video. Leave this hole as it is.
• B: The audio line shows activity, so someone is talking and a subtitle should appear on the video here. To fix this, slide box 487 to the right, and/or slide box 488 to the left to fill the hole. Notice who is talking (if more than one speaker), and sentence breaks. When the audio line activity is lower (more flat), that is likely when the sentence break should occur. If you are not sure, you can listen to the video.
• C: The Characters Per Second number is in the red, meaning that this subtitle is rushed and not viewable long enough to read comfortably. Adjust on the line for D at the bottom.
• D: Box 486 doesn't have any breathing space. You can create some room & allow the subtitle to remain viewable for a little longer time if you slightly shift box 485 to the left and box 487 to the right. Then expand box 486 out on each side. Be careful not to move it too much or it will be out of sync, but you can move it a little bit.

As you are working, Auto-Scroll and Undo/ Redo can be helpful.

Gauge your progress by the indicator on the right of the subtitles.

If you need to stop partway through a translation session, keep track of where you are so it is easier to pick up where you left off using the timestamp in the video or the line number.

a. Glossary Terms

Use the same words that appear in the glossary for consistency if applicable.

b. English Transcripts:

You will be editing directly in Maestra, so you will not need to translate the English Transcripts into the target language.

However, it  may help to have the corresponding transcript open as a reference. You may want to see full sentences and paragraphs to better understand the meaning of what is being said in the video. (This will be especially helpful to see when translating into a language where sentence  structure differs from English.)

When all editing is completed, use the arrow button to go back to the main menu showing all of the titles in the folder.

Select the title you just finished correcting by checking the box to the left of the title.

Then click on Rename.

Replace EN with two-letter code of the target language.

This example is for Italian, so IT will replace EN. For Russian, it will be RU. For Japanese, it will be JA. Et cetera.

Click Rename.

It will now appear on the list showing that the subtitles for the target language are completed!
