Under Current Channel select the target language.

Click on Subtitle.

Click on the title of the file you will work on to open it.

In order to view the target language subtitles, ensure that target language (flag) appears in the upper left. If it is set to English, use the dropdown to change it to the target language. 

The target language subtitles should appear underneath the corresponding English subtitles.

Edit directly in the target language spaces. Do not change any of the words in the English spaces.

Edit for: Correct translation of words, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and speaker.

As you edit, use the glossary terms already translated for consistency.

Your work will be saved automatically.

Watch the CPS (characters per second) on the lines.

When colored Blue, they are ideal. Orange is a little high, and Red is too high.

The CPS can be lowered by using shorter Italian phrases that convey the same meaning. This will allow the subtitles to appear for an adequate amount of time to be easily read by the viewer.

Another way to lower the CPS is to split or combine English lines. (Split a red high numbered one into 2 phrases, or combine a high red one with a lower blue one to make them both medium orange.)

Use Return to split lines, and use Delete to combine them.

Use the Ai feature or write out your own translation when a change is necessary. The Ai feature generates alternatives in Italian that you can use if you like.

Choose to keep the Ai translation, or click Shorter, Longer, or Custom Prompt for options, or Generate New.

Use Replace with Selection to save.

To shorten CPS you can sometimes remove unnecessary words, as in this case the word "Ora" for "Now" can be edited out since it does not change the meaning, but remember to edit to correct capitalization whenever needed.

The video appears on the right side and can be played as you work.

Use play/pause, volume, and speed as desired.

The timeline at the bottom shows where you are in the video and what phrases will appear together. Don’t change anything on the timeline, as we want to keep the subtitles in sync with what is happening visually on the video.

Of course with English audio, the Italian will not match exactly, but we want to keep it as close as possible.

As you are working, Auto-Scroll and Undo/ Redo can be helpful.

Gauge your progress by the indicator on the right of the subtitles.

If you need to stop partway through a translation session, keep track of where you are so it is easier to pick up where you left off using the timestamp in the video or the line number.

Use Resources listed below as you work:

a. Glossary Terms  

Use the same words that appear in the glossary for consistency if applicable.

b. English Transcripts:  

You will not need to translate the English Transcripts into the target language, but it may help to have the corresponding transcript open to refer to as you edit directly in Maestra. You may want to see full sentences and paragraphs to better understand the meaning of what is being said in the video.

When all editing is completed,  use the arrow button to go back to the main menu showing all of the titles in the folder.

Select the title by checking the box to the left of the title. Then Click on Rename.

Replace EN with two-letter code of the target language. Click Rename.

It will now appear on the list showing that the subtitles for the target language are completed!
